Raleigh ranks No. 2 in best performing cities list, No. 5 for quality of life

Raleigh is ranked No. 2 on Milken Institute’s best-performing large cities list, up from a No. 3 spot in 2023.

Raleigh among top of best performing cities, quality of life

Raleigh is ranked No. 2 on Milken Institute’s best-performing large cities list, up from a No. 3 spot in 2023.

Raleigh also ranked No. 5 on U.S. News & World Report’s “best places to live for quality of life list,” which lists the five top places to live as:

  1. Ann Arbor, Michigan
  2. Boulder, Colorado
  3. Boise, Idaho
  4. Honolulu, Hawaii
  5. Raleigh, North Carolina

To create the list, U.S. News used data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the FBI, the U.S. Department of Labor, a public survey and internal resources to assess factors like crime, quality and availability of health care, quality of education and average commute time.

The Top 5 from Milken Institute’s best-performing large cities list is as follows:

  1. Austin-Round Rock, Texas
  2. Raleigh, North Carolina
  3. Boise City, Idaho
  4. Salt Lake City, Utah
  5. Provo-Orem, Utah

Raleigh has received numerous accolades in recent years, but it’s also an expensive place to live.

In March, SmartAsset listed Raleigh as the 23rd highest salary needed to live comfortably, with a single adult needing an average salary of $102,752 or an hourly wage of $49.40.

he estimate is more than double what the average resident of Raleigh makes. According to Wake County census data, the median income of someone living in Raleigh is $47,003 for single women, and $50,955 for single men.

Data also shows Raleigh homes are selling for about $100,000 more than entire South region.

In Wake County, prices are up more than 3% compared to last year, according to the Register of Deeds, which shows that the median home value in the county is $474,750, almost $100,000 more than what HUD and the census show is the median sale price for a home in the Southeastern region of the U.S.
